As we come to the end of our Mission Emphasis Month, it is tempting to think of missions as something we support, something we pray for, or something that happens somewhere else. But Jesus’ command is much more personal: “Go and make disciples.” Dallas Willard, in The Great Omission, points to a troubling gap in the church’s understanding of the Great Commission. We have often emphasized making converts without giving equal attention to making disciples. Yet Jesus did not command us merely to fill decision cards; He commanded us to make people who would learn to follow Him, obey Him, and help others follow Him. Missions, therefore, does not end when someone hears the Gospel. It continues as that person is taught to live under the lordship of Christ.
